Meditation for the Workplace

Creating a productive and healthy work environment is a challenge even during normal times. How do you create a thriving workplace when many are still working from home and still dealing with the ramifications from Covid-19? The answer might be surprisingly simple: meditation. 

Joining this episode of Calm, Cool and Connected is Meris Gebhardt, Founder of Opulent Mindfulness. She is here to share how her experience in sales and personal history of anxiety led to her founding a company to bring mindfulness to the corporate world.

Dr. Fedrick: hello and welcome to calm colon connected. I'm your host, Dr. Elizabeth bay. Mindfulness can be used, described as the ability to be completely aware of your surroundings to be present in the moment to not be overly reactive or emotional, but rather grounded and calm. And there's a lot of research on the importance of mindfulness and its effectiveness for assisting with decreasing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and even ADHD.

Here with us today is Maris Gebhardt. The founder of opulent [00:01:00] mindfulness. Maurice is here to share with us about meditation and mindfulness and how it can be utilized in the corporate world. Hi, Maris. Welcome. 

Meris: Hello. Thank you for having me. 

Dr. Fedrick: Thank you so much for joining us. This is a really interesting topic that I think will be helpful for a lot of people.

Before we jump in. Tell us a little bit about you and the work that you're currently. 

Meris: Right. So we have a virtual meditation studio and we are offering subscriptions for corporations to sign on for all their employees to join any one of our 10 live group sessions that we have each week. We come with a new and fresh theme each week and it's pertinent to what's happening in the world.

What's happening in the industry and the latest science behind why meditation and mindfulness is very helpful for performance and ultimately the bottom line and having very happy employees. 

Dr. Fedrick: Interesting. How did you get into working with corporate wellness? How did you get into this space to become 

Meris: right?

So 20 years [00:02:00] in software sales, combined with my own situation with anxiety and the two made for the perfect storm. And I wanted the solution to feel better about myself, feel more confident in my work and have more of a security and a better outlook on life. And so I started practicing meditation. 

Dr. Fedrick: Okay.

What is some of the benefits that you have noticed? So with the corporations that you're working with and the people that you're working with directly, what are some of the benefits that you see when people are using your.

Meris: Yeah. So I definitely am coming to this practice from a place of my own healing. And I went to meditation to find a safe space. So a space where I could feel relaxed, natural. So everything's going to be okay. And so I absolutely try to convey this type of energy in the work that I do and the guidance that I lead and in the workplace, we're seeing immediate results from people from just one session, even when they feel a lot more relaxed, they're able to have a [00:03:00] better outlook on things.

They have improved relationships with their colleagues and even in their own home settings. So it's definitely a practice that is done in your own personal life. Or at work and each connects into the other and bleeds into the other as far as the benefits. 

Dr. Fedrick: Okay. And, and what is even the benefit of a corporation providing this type of self care, these types of benefits for their employees?

When a corporation demonstrates this level of care for their employees, what are the benefits you see from 

Meris: that? Right. So I appreciate using this word care because we see that when an employee feels cared for by their employer, then they in turn care more. They have more energy. They're more likely to show up, to work on time with their bringing their best self forth.

We're seeing a lot of what's called presenteeism right now, especially with our online and our virtual. Hybrid work model these days people are present, but not really there. Right? And so presenteeism is a phenomenon that we're seeing a lot more. [00:04:00] And so we want to engage people and some people feel connected to the work they're doing when we're in alignment with our values and the work that we're putting out and producing.

Then we have a lot greater energy and inspiration and creativity comes we're much more efficient and effective in our daily lives. 

Dr. Fedrick: Sure. And so this is like you're describing it as, I mean, it's a culture that really these corporations are creating of, of that care of the comradery. The we see you as people, not just as our employees.

Meris: Exactly right. And even giant global corporations will say we do it just because it's the right thing to do. I always lead with, you know, the ROI, why it's valuable because I thought the employer might want to see the investment purposes for connecting with this kind of a practice. During their employees, but in the end it became a softer offering whereby we just know that people feel better.

We know that we want to have all kinds of [00:05:00] solutions. Maybe meditation works for one person, but it doesn't work for another. So this is one modality. And a list of several offerings, but those who it does resonate with is very strong. So they come often, they mentioned to me where they noticed the practice I'm helping them, you know, at the Thanksgiving dinner table and even into their own personal lives.

And so it's, it's really so rewarding for me to do this work and hear the feedback that's quite immediate actually. And I'm always impressed with that. And how 

Dr. Fedrick: is your program set up? So how is it designed? Do they get. Membership, how long are the classes walk us 

Meris: through how. Yeah, so the structure looks a little, something like this.

I like to onboard people with an all hands or an initial launch presentation, and then they have unlimited access as a monthly subscriber to the platform. So the employees are offered a link to find the schedule and pick the classes they'd like to attend that week. And then they have unlimited access.

So as mentioned the [00:06:00] 10 live classes per week, so that's about 40 in a month, which is a very fantastic. Unbelievable value actually. And then the sessions themselves are 25 minutes in length. So we give people a bit of a cushion at the end of the the session to get to their next meeting on time, have a little bit of a breather between and all the online platforms.

And we. Introduce also some movement. So we do a little bit of our movement opening up the chest, talking about alignment, definitely featuring breath work, which we know to be calming to the nervous system. We do some mood Rez where Y Y we hold our hands in certain gestures. Some are good for clarity for focus.

And then we also have introduced a few months. Whereby we are chanting a few Sanskrit terms that help us maybe think about compassion, prosperity wisdom. So always introducing new themes and concepts to really integrate the practice, to be a more engaging and uplifting experience. 

Dr. Fedrick: Sure. And then do users have access to.

[00:07:00] Prerecorded ones or are they, is there like a library that they access or is it primarily these 10 a week? 

Meris: It's primarily the live that I focus on. I think there's so many apps out there and so many online and digital offerings that I don't really dare want to compete with that. And so this is a chance for people to also have those practices in their own personal life, but to come to the online sessions, to get a refresh or review or revival feel that live connection with someone because a lot of the.

That I do is very much sensed with who's present in the session. So I'm channeling my guidance live. I'm connected. I'm speaking this wisdom as to what I think people need in that particular moment. So it's, it's very much Yeah, channeled and live and 

Dr. Fedrick: organic. Okay. Which I love that cause back to about being there in the moment, but not necessarily present.

I'm sure that can be really common to do when you're maybe listening to a prerecorded or you're using it on [00:08:00] an app. Like maybe it's playing in the background, but are you actually engaged in it? And so it sounds like when you're doing it live, it really increases the connection. And engagement of the 

Meris: practice and it ensures that you're actually showing up for it because we can all say, oh, I've got the app.

I'll do it sometime. But we don't really commit because it's not blocked out on the calendar. So this is part of that discipline practice that I hope to instill in people that we're here. We're showing up on time, carved out this space for you, you know, in your calendar, it's present, it's there, it's visible.

So that makes all the difference in the world when we're committed to that specific time. 

Dr. Fedrick: And so can individuals access your product as well? Or do you have to do it through your. 

Meris: Absolutely great question. We have about five times as many individuals as we have have corporations. So we're definitely an individual platform as well.

And so it's available to an individual subscriber, but we avail it to their entire household. So anyone [00:09:00] in the house and children are actually very good with meditation. There are a lot more open and receptive to the practice and they're quick learners and they don't have so much stress bombarding their minds.

Really easily able to tap in and relax 

Dr. Fedrick: So tell so for people who are in this interest, how can they best prepare to come to one of, one of these classes? Do they have to bring anything with them? Like what type of setting they should they be in? How are they best 

Meris: set up for. Great question. So we want to have a bit of formality because it helps us to have a better outcome.

When we commit, then we get a better return on that commitment. And so we ask that people are seated in a quiet space. One that's not fraught with lots of stimulation. Normally. Food, right? We want to be able to close the eyes, rest the brain, ultimately, and not have added distraction coming at you. We don't want to face south and we want to be facing a direction south, east, west, or north and [00:10:00] sitting on something that is white and.

Dr. Fedrick: Okay. So there are some specifics there. I like 

Meris: that. And you can sit on the floor. You can lay down even, and maybe rest your legs upon the base bench of a chair or couch. But we don't want to be lying down necessarily to sleep. We can sleep in very important. I'm a huge advocate of good sleep. But this is a practice.

Well, we're resting the brain while awake. So it's a very different activity in the brain, in its healing properties. 

Dr. Fedrick: Okay. Yeah. Very interesting. where can our viewers learn more about you and, and are you online or social media?
